That2D's News

Posted by That2D - January 23rd, 2021

Pixel day prompted me to dig through my folders full of old pixel art I toyed with back a few years ago, so I thought I'd throw them up here for posterity's sake. Honestly I used to be better than I thought, I'll keep digging and posting the good stuff.

Inverted 2 and Looter are still being made, very slow progress I suck as a game dev lol. But hey once I get those done I can justify dropping unity and learning Godot.

Happy Pixel Day 2021!

My Ludum Dare 45 entry is done, never thought I'd see the day I have two games uploaded here considering the mapping burnout.

I've been on another project for a bit and just started my entry for Ludum Dare 45, it will be posted here as long as I complete it. INVERTED 2 isn't dead just level design burns me out quicker than I'd like.

Here's a short gif from the LD entry as it is on day 1.

Short one this time.

Collage sucks, I suck at making levels.

Collage is out in about 2-to-3 weeks, gonna be leaving state for a bit to visit family for a bit and my laptop is able to work on Unity luckily.

I'm really just trying to finish making levels for this damn thing so I can get it up and move on to other ideas.

Instead of screenshots I'll just estimate what's left to be finished:

10 levels are currently done, I'm shooting for more than the first game so at least 14 overall.

Art is going to have a slight pass on it, nothing major just some particles and decals for background stuff, honestly shouldn't take more than a day or two.

Sound will probably come last as the game only has like one sound effect so I just need to change it out with something less placeholder.

Music I'm hoping to find someone here that's willing to collaborate on a few tracks or has tracks they are willing to let me implement (with proper credit of course), so outside of finding someone who's up for it that shouldn't take long.

Nothing super exciting to say, progress has been slower than I'd like if I'm honest. Levels are being made but that's probably my least strong part so far. Overall I'm trying to have 20 levels to beat out the original's 12, we'll see how that goes.

On the bright side I reworked jumping a bit, instead of giving you the full jump velocity the second you press jump it instead spreads it out over the full course of the jump. Meaning you can have shorter hops, and hold for a longer jump. Just like a real platformer, WOW!

Short update:

INVERTED 2 is still being made, less progress has been made over my winter break than I would prefer. Despite that I expect to get really early copies to some irl friends fairly soon for testing and feedback on the new mechanics and levels (as they're made). I still need to pound out levels and art assets but I feel like that will probably be the easier part for me.

And just for a little thing: a (mostly) working main menu mockup:

Default unity menus lul(The default Unity menu sprites will get replaced.)

I think INVERTED is in a good state as of right now, bar some slight platforming tweaks and any bug reports that may pop up in the future. As such I want to mark today as the first real day of development on the sequel, brainstorming has begun and it's first assets are being made as of today. Although I still have a few more finals to finish so actual substantal development will likely begin next week.

If things go to plan INVERTED 2 will not only be more varied gameplay wise but also visually. If I'm feeling it maybe some real music too (instead of classic horror stings Paulstreched 1000%). I want to break up the levels into episodes and have a proper main menu and level select system, I'm not sure how I'll go about saves but I could always fall back on the classic password save system.

I will keep an eye out for any further feedback on INVERTED's page.

Thank you.

I am blown away by the response and overall feedback I've gotten on INVERTED. I've already thrown out a few patches but it's looking like the total movement rewrite is going to be needed to fix the biggest issues with the game. I'm not sure how long that would take to do just yet, I've had a few cracks at it in the past with small bits of progress. I'm leaning towards not releasing a redux of INVERTED but instead just releasing a straight up sequel to it after the original gets to a state I like. The sequel would be the improved version with new levels, more levels, new mechanics, and features.

I will probably upload old bits of pixel art I've done in the past as well, I haven't actively made pixel art in months but I might as well put it up somewhere rather than let them rot in my Dropbox.

My end goal for this account is to eventually make simple fun games that I would have wanted to play 10 years ago when I was goofing around with flash sites. But I guess we'll see what comes of this.

I played games on Newgrounds when I was younger, was always into flash games but never learned flash itself. Recently due to a nostalgia livestream of flashgames by RevScarecrow I made an account, thinking nothing of it, maybe I'll rate a few games and whatever. I've learned how to use Unity in the past 4-5 years, nothing indepth, just as a part of me learning C#. But I've made a few games and demos that I've mostly kept to myself.

Following the artist purge of Tumblr I discovered that Newgrounds supports Unity WebGL uploads, so I've decided to start working on projects I can post here. My first order of buisness was to upload one of the first games I've ever made, a simple platformer named INVERTED, originally made for LD30. Previously the game was only avalible on itch.io using the depreciated Unity Web Plugin, sadly I've lost access to my account there due to 2FA goofyness. I made minor adjustments to INVERTED, reducing frustrating parts, simplifying respawning and adding an effect on respawn to make it more obvious that you've respawned and where you start.

Hopefully I can push out some new projects that I can share with you all.
